42nd District Update (#9 on Dirty Dozen)

Outlook: Leans Republican

---------------RAISED (June)--------- RAISED (Overall)------- CASH ON HAND

ALBO----------$63,081------------------$293,297----------------$204,056
WERKHEISER-$34,437------------------$232,821------------------$127,792

Dave Albo widens his fundraising lead over Greg Werkheiser here. One positive for Greg is that he cut his spending down significantly in June. However, it appears a lot of staff/consultant costs were deferred until after the reporting period, so it is hard to tell how much is cutback and how much is July dated checks.

With all this money coming into the district will either candidate be able to break through and be heard in the fall?

Going by memory here, but the largest expenditure by Werkheiser in the two previous reporting periods was on "staff/consultants" -- specifically his consultant.

While anything is possible, odds are his spending pattern was high there too for June/early July, meaning that the fundraising gap between the two is probably even wider. It makes sense as Ken and Chris did a lot of work in late and early June.

Greg appears to have tapped out his donor list at a time when he needs money the most.

Is Dave Albo actually knocking on doors in the district? Jeff Frederick, not so far away, proved that you can unseat a longtime incumbent largely through aggressive one-to-one voter outreach. From what I've heard, Werkheiser is out there knocking on a lot of doors. Is Albo?

At 2:34 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes.

At 8:59 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually...Albo spent 50% of his money last period.

At 9:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think Werkheiser has a consultant....

Nice try Jeremy Greenfield.

I don't see either one of these guys having any problem getting their message out (having too little money).

Please don't make this thread a repeat of the last 42nd thread where people tautned each other over ONE FILING PERIOD. Albo raised good money. Great. Kudos to him. Werkheiser raised the 2nd most amongst challengers. Great. Albo spent a bit more this time. Whoopie.

Me thinks none of this matters. Calm down. Deep breath. Thanks.

From everything I have seen it looks like Werkheiser is becoming a bigger and bigger disappointment as each day goes by. The guy has proven an ability to do two things: raise alot of money quickly and then spend it like a drunken sailor.

Can someone out there please explain to me the following:
Why he is paying his campaign manager and field director $4,100 a month each (that is $49,200 a year)? {That is way too much for a campaign manager on a House of Delegates race to make, especially considering that we are not talking about Carville and Begala here}

Why did the campaign manager get a "signing bonus", what is she Derek Jeter?

Why did they wait several weeks to update their website?

With all that "talent" how come no one there has noticed Albo is using the state seal on his website (which I think is a no-no)?

Why couldn't they get a volunteer coordinator with some professional experience, I am sure of the ex-staff from the campaigns in the 45th district is/was probably available?

If you are a Democrat and you gave Werkheiser I would ask Greg to please send Chris and Bergen over to your house to help with yard work. If you are paying that much for them to work you might as well get something out of them besides a poorly managed campaign.

At 9:24 AM, Anonymous Not Stanley Martin said...

Sidebar with regard to using the state seal:
The Secretary of the Commonwealth is the keeper of the Great and Lesser Seals of Virginia, which are restricted to official state use only. The SOC often enforces this statute with a warning and threat of a fine. A website for a campaign for state office is not an official use. However, displaying the flag (which is the Great Seal on a blue background) is a way to get around this, so long as it's not just a blue square around the seal.

Woah, woah, woah, chill out! People up here in NOVA who have seen the Werkheiser campaign in action are pretty impressed. Just ask Lowell Feld.

Spending is an issue, I'd agree. But hey - so is child molestation - cha cha cha!

(I saw the Blue Dog say cha cha cha one time and I was so impressed I thought I'd give it a try. It beats "badabing badaboom" and perhaps even "Zing!"

That will make out top 10 list for best comments at the end of the campaign.

At 12:19 PM, Blogger MR JMS said...

Drop 20K from each campaigns COH and that is what you really have.

Albo will walk away with this one in my opinion. I also give it about 2-3 terms before we hear the title "Mr. Speaker" when refering to Dave.

And yes, $4100/month is more money than the down-ticket statewide managers make... I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell his campaign... I will even throw Derek Jeter in.

At 1:24 PM, Anonymous Paul Orondorf said...

As for all the people up in NOVA who are impressed with Werkheiser, I think you are referring to the same group of party/committee members whose only talents in life seem to be showing up to meetings, bitching, and losing elections to Tom Davis and his cronies. Pardon me if I am not impressed that that crowd is gaga for Greg Werkheiser.

I don't know enough about how Richmond works to say whether Albo will ever be speaker, but I do agreement with mr jms on his other comments.

Paul:

Oh, so you're one of those wacktivists who doesn't see eye to eye with the Virginia Democratic Party? Fantastic! Tell me more about winning elections, especially against "Tom Davis and his cronies". Come over to my blog and we'll have a discussion.

I do have one question for you - have you ever knocked on a door? Or do you just play on your computer all day long?

>>Werkheiser raised the 2nd most amongst challengers.<<

While that it technically true, in order to make that claim you have to count his prior filing periods. What I think is more significant it the trend all of them are showing.

VPAP allows you to view things by filing periods:

http://www.vpap.org/cands/mostraised.cfm?CycleID=L&CandID=H

Werkheiser certainly raised a great deal during the first filing period. However, as time has progressed the amount he is raising relative to other challengers has declined sharply.

That said, his fundraising relative to other challengers is less important than his funraising relative to Dave Albo. During the first period, Werkheiser had the advantage in that he could solicit money while the House of Delegates was in session. Since Dave Albo was allowed to do likewise, he has consistently outpaced Werkheiser. The gaps was close to 3x in this period.

Money is but one sign of momentum. However, it is telling that Werkheiser is falling here.

I'm still a bit surprised as to why people are apoplectic about paying professional campaign staff something around $4,000 per month. If a staffer were to work full time, that would only be $48,000 annually, but these people don't work the same job for 12 straight months. And $48K annually ain't no big shakes in NoVA. There are no benefits, no 401(k) matching funds, no long term job security perks for positions like these.

So if campaigns are hiring people who are not just out of college and who have some actual professional experience in the world, $4,000 is not an outrageous amount of money to pay someone. If a full-time campaign staffer is working a conservative 65 hours per week (that's every day plus weekends, evening events, etc.) we're talking $15/hour with no benefits and tremendous stress. That's hardly a king's ransom.

I think campaigns who pay a pittance for someone with little experience are being penny-wise but pound foolish. Experienced, professional, extremely competent staffers bring in more money and more volunteers. There's nothing more frustrating for volunteers, many of whom have years or decades of professional experience, than to work with arrogant, inexperienced, unprofessional campaign staffers who got the job primarily because they're willing to work for pennies.

I'm not saying that some people who work for little pay aren't competent; I've worked with many campaign staffers who don't get paid nearly what they're worth. But hiring staff on the cheap rarely pays off. If paying someone $4K rather than $1K per month means that volunteers stick around and recruit others, donors are satisfied, event hosts are treated well, and goals are being surpassed, it's a worthy investment.

Maura, are you married? I'm a GOPer from Stafford, but I saw your picture on Raising Kaine. You are very attractive, and I was wondering if you would consider dating a Republican. If so, please reply here, and I will email you. Will you be my Mary Matilan?

At 7:59 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maura - It's not thay they're being paid too much compared to what people in NoVA make. They're getting paid about double the market rate for professional campaign managers and field directors, and Chris doesn't even have professional political experience. Look at some other people's reports and you'll see that. It's too bad for the people who get into their line of work that the pay is so low, but it is.

At 11:58 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look at the other races in NOVA. Bulova: 4100. Barg: 3500. Just because the GOP uses LAs with not campaign experience as managers...

Woo hoo! Propositioned on the NLS blog. I've gotta visit here more often! ;-) I got a marriage proposal in blog comments after I appeared on Nightline, so who says blogging isn't good for one's social life?

Seriously, Anon 11:51, thanks for the compliment, if it's for real. I find Matalin and Carville to be quite a disturbing couple, actually. I really don't see how people who could love each other and vow life-long loyalty to one another could dedicate their professional lives to undermining each other's work. Seems just creepy to me in a fundamental way.

That's not to say I couldn't love someone with whom I have some political differences. Of my two brothers, who I love very much, one is an anti-abortion NRA member and avid hunter with an impressive gun collection (who's also a Democrat, resisting stereotypes) and the other is a libertarian-leaning economic conservative Republican who think's Bill O'Reilly is just super. (Shudder.)

But it seems to me that anyone who cares enough about the wonky insider details of House races in Virginia to read this obscure blog would have a hard time respecting the values of someone on the "other side" enough to date or marry them.

Of course, if you're just interested because of my stunning good looks, who could blame you? ;-)

Seriously, even if the comment was made in jest, here's a sincere thought:

Any commenter here who's interested in some bipartisan blogger socializing should definitely sign up for the Blogging Summit at the Sorensen Institute in Charlottesville in August. It's going to be fascinating to see what happens when we all meet in person.

At 3:46 PM, Blogger Maura in VA said...

Anon 7:59AM: I guess my concern is less about "market rate" and more about "value for the money". (Though the comment below yours suggests that Werkheiser's staff compensation is not WAY out of the market rate ballpark, anyway.)

I haven't volunteered for Greg yet myself, but I've met a number of people who've volunteered for him, and I've heard nothing but very good things thus far (which is pretty rare).
