Southwest Virginia

We're finally ready to start calling the races in Southwest Virginia. Let's start with the 3 easy ones. All three of these incumbents will either be unopposed or very lightly opposed.

3rd District: Jackie Stump
Safe Democratic

4th District: Joe Johnson
Safe Democratic

5th District: Bill Carrico
Safe Republican

The makeup of the House now has 49 GOP, 28 DEM, and 2 IND.

With both IND members joining the GOP Caucus, we can now officially project that the Republicans have won the House of Delegates.

June 25th, more than 4 months out from election day...

Now the last 21 uncalled races will be over the margin.

I can't say I agree with your analysis. Maybe I'm wrong, but 1 of the 2 independents doesn't caucus with the republicans. Watkins Abbitt doesnt caucus with anyone.

I think rual is correct...if you look at committee senoriy on the HD web site he is listed after the Democrats...so he must be a "true" indy in the eyes of the Republicans.

Are there really caucus dues? How much are they? Does anyone else not pay?

"Optional" $500

7 others didn't pay (54 of 62 did pay either $500 or $250, most $500)

If you want to know who didn't read the list yourself and let us know.

Thanks!

For accuracy: Abbitt does not attend House Republican Caucus meetings. He sits at his desk in the chamber and eats his lunch. When the House breaks during session for Caucus meetings, the Clerk announces where each caucus is meeting and Abbitt inevitably replies, "And the Independent Caucus will meet at my desk."

Last Anon is right. Abbitt is always on the floor of the house during caucus, always with a sandwhich from chickens (the little restaurant inside the capitol).

I think the only reson Abbitt votes for the Republican leadership is to keep from getting challenged in his distrct. This guy was part of the Democratic leadership until the R's got the Majority. Anyone else think he got scared?

Rural: Scared or smart? Watt's cozy relationship with the GOP landed him on Approps. By the way, I like your blogger name - it reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw in Richmond last session.

Would that be the sticker affixed to Al Pollard's station wagon?

53 Republicans and Putney contributed. Of these 54, 41 (including Putney) contributed $500, while 13 Republicans only contributed $250: Cole, Dudley, Hamilton, Speaker Howell, Hugo, McQuigg, Morgan, Nixon, Nutter, O'Bannon, Orrock, Rapp, Sherwood

7 Republicans did not contribute: Cline, Frederick, Janis, Bob Marshall, Reese, Reid, Saxman

Abbitt also did not contribute, as has previously been stated.

To Anon 10:34 and 8:04-

I'm glad you like it. The phrase was actually used on the Eastern Shore long before Pollard used it.
