Primary challenge to Jim Moran in 2006

An email we just got. Developing...

David isn't the only Englin with designs on public office. People who were worried about David's support for the Morans should have looked a little deeper - who do you really think decided to put the Rosenberg sign out front of the Englin house? There's going to be an Englin running for Congress in 2006, but not the one you think. I know for a fact that Shayna has already been getting pledges for money for her race. "Team Englin" volunteers were told not to go far, that they'd have another Enlgin to stump for. David Englin is a nice guy just trying to do right. Shayna is the one with the great big ego and the great big ambition. Watch out, Alexandria. You may have wanted one Englin, but now you're stuck with another.

Let me relay a story I heard from the Englin victory party...

After it was clear David was going to win Shayna went in the other room. David looked flushed, sweaty, just like you would expect after campaigning all day. Shayna went and did herself up and was overheard saying "As bad as David looks, I need to get in the picture with him."

SHE USED HER HUSBAND LOOKING BAD TO TRY TO FURTHER HER OWN POLITICAL GOALS. SHE IS SICK.

She will have my vote.. And if she loses the nomination, we might have Jim Hurysz in the general.
Lisa Marie has not given any public indication that she is going to run in 2006, and she's having her third child.

Thank God I listened to the people who asked me to take down a thread and do certain things in order to enhance David Englin's chances of winning. I know that I caused him no significant harm in a race that he won handily.

Maura Keaney, all is forgiven. You helped David win, all I did was blab and not hurt him. Your website gets more hits than mine, and I am jealous.

"Not Larry Sabato" is reporting the following. NLS's website is great. And David Englin is going to be a regular columnist on it:

Where do I sign up to donate money for that! If it is true "from NLS's mouth to God's ear" and Shayna sets up a campaign committee now then my wife and I can kick in enough to max out by the time the 2006 primary rolls around.
Shayna can win, and even if she doesn't, will we get a lot of Moran busting done campaigning for her.

Run, Shayna, run so we can have fun, Shayna, fun attacking Jim Moran and promoting a positive progressive vision for change to replace Jim Moran's corrupt one.

And guess what? If Shayna asks me to take down this thread I will. Sorry for anyone who might post to it if that happens. From now on I should do what she and David and their friends ask when I am asked and not give back any guff.

So I can be an Englin-supporting robot just like I called Maura a Moran-supporting robot.

From one short light-haired female Alexandrian (Lisa Marie Cheney) to another (Shayna Englin), they were and are our best hopes for sand-blasting Jim Moran out of office.

Okay, so let me get this straight: NLS asks David Englin to be a celebrity blogger and then two days before his scheduled debut, he leaks a story about Englin's wife, presumably to get everyone revved up so Englin can't talk about anything except the speculation over his wife. Man, NLS, you're a pro. You ought to go work for the Post!

I have a hard time believing this. I hope for their sake that it's not true, because politically it would be incredibly stupid. Sorry to beat the drum that some have already beaten but hey, you really do not take a 30% result in a state assembly *primary* election and perceive that as a cue for your wife to challenge a scummy congressman.

Remember Aesop's fable about the dog and the bone. I think David and Shayna are smarter than that.

When I saw the anonymous report about Shayna Englin running for Congress on this site this afternoon, I did not believe it. So I did what NLS should have done. I contaced the Englins. I can tell you that the report is categorically false.
NLS has done a disservice to its readers by circulating a false report that could have so easily been checked and found to be baseless.

I did not claim any of this was true.

I just was repeating an email I got in my inbox.

Either way the Englin's would let us know if it was true.

Would have been a good story..

As an Alexandria resident and loyal Republican, I would love to vote against Congressman Jim Moran. But I'm not supporting a socialist Democrat couple with Howard Dean connections. GOP operatives know Auntie Mame and Joe Trippi are wandering about King Street in search for a candidate to challenge the incumbent.

Was that Mame's nasty breath, or fat armpits we smelled?

It's a vendetta against their former boss, Congressman Moran, who fired her for cooking the campaign books. Mame holds a political grudge like a Big Mac, French fries and chocolate shake -- She supersizes it.

As for Mr. Michael Shear (NLS), I suggest you stop dealing with Warner's stacked deck because nobody is untouchable in Washington.

It's time to, Go fish!

Jeez, NLS. Couldn't you have picked up the phone and called Englin before you hit "publish?" Interesting way to treat your valued contributors - publishing unsubstantiated rumors about their wives.

Maybe Englin's son is going to run for president of his preschool. Let's get a thread going about that! I hear the little tyke is full of ambition.

At 8:30 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I lost a little respect for how you run this blog today NLS.

Just to clarify: While I'm certainly flattered by the offer, I have not agreed to be one of Not Larry's "celebrity bloggers" and I will not be contributing to a weekly series. Not Larry jumped the gun with the announcement and apparently hasn't had a chance to publish a correction.

In addition to being the best father and husband I can be, I plan to spend my time this political season working with our grassroots army to help other Democrats win in November, to defeat my Republican opponent, and to squeeze out every possible Northern Virginia vote for Tim Kaine, Leslie Byrne, and Criegh Deeds. If you want to be a part of that effort, sign up to volunteer at www.davidenglin.org. (Bear with us while we transition the site from primary mode to general election mode.)

Best,

David

PS - To those courageous souls who make anonymous personal attacks on my wife and son, our address is 1505 Wayne Street, Alexandria, Va. Why not come by to state your case in person and stand by your remarks?

This is pathetic. This is part of a smear campaign by people who could not beat David fair and square so now they are resorting to spreading rumors and outright lies to undermine him.

The fact is whoever sent this lie into NLS is a jealous loser. Get over it, David won because he worked really hard and that is what he will do as our delegate in Richmond. My advice to whoever emailed this to NLS is rather than waste everyone's time just go back to Loserville and stop embarassing yourself.

NLS,

Do you vet your sources at all? In three days you post three huge unsubstantiated rumors. Theres a difference between stirring the pot and downright lies.

At 10:13 AM, Blogger Shayna Englin said...

No need to bash NLS. Much of politics is rumor and innuendo, and NLS has got to post what they get. They put it out there publicly, I've cleared up the record publicy ... now on to much more interesting and relevant VA political news!

NLS was a great source for news, opinion, and rumor during the primary cycle, and I look forward to more of the same through to November.

At 10:22 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is a very unfortunate post. You've lost nearly all credibility with this reader.

I understand why you wanted to report this juicy gossip, but it could have been excerpted if you really believed it had any validity. When you post things about his wife's gigantic ego, then it's descended into bashing and cruel intentions.

Gee, should I write you with info with the name of a Va. GOP guy who blogs and beat up his wife and kid. Or the VA. anti-gay Republican who has had 2 boyfriends. Or the "pro-family" GOP former delegate-candidate who lived with his girlfriend for years. I don't actually have any PROOF, just rumor from my reliable sources, but hey, that apparently doesn't stop you.............

Damn, I leave the area for a few days, come back and check up on the good old virginia 2005 blog, and suddenly its turned into the National Enquirer.

To the first anon poster here, im going to echo the sentiments of Anon 11:50. I was at the victory party, you are absolutely full of shit.

Honestly though, this is not the Washington Post, this isn't the New York Times. The goal of this blog shouldn't be to break unsubstantiated stories, or to post anonymous emails slandering people who don't deserve to be slandered. It should be to provide good, honest coverage of the races that are going on across Virginia. What occurred on this blog in the last week or so is both shameful and absurd.

I admired the way that you were able to maintain a degree of professionalism during the primary election season NLS. However, if you could tell me where this email alleging a primary challenge to Jim Moran fits into the VIRGINIA 2005 (emphasis on "5") blogspot, I would love to know. If you can explain to me how this information is pivotal in providing coverage on the 2005 elections (did I mention the emphasis on "5") I would love to know.

Also, your response in the comments section was trite. Where you should be apologizing for publishing a ridiculous rumor, you hide behind the fact that you never said it was true. What may I ask was your intent by publishing the email on your blog then? Where on the main page does it say, "This may not be true?" It doesn't, you wait to gauge the reaction from the comments, then when they are negative, you decide to stand up and claim that you are not to blame....come on....

I won't be back to this blog. From what I read, it seems as though a few other people have picked up the blog bug, and I'll be getting my information from them from now on.

This isn't the first time an anonymous email has been posted on the main page, but I certainly hope that it will be the last. Do yourself, your blog, and your readers a service and do a little background work. It may not provide the most interesting "action" on the blog, but you'll garner a lot more respect for providing the kind of journalism (as I think we can safely call this) that is so often overlooked or ignored.

At 1:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think I'm beggining to understand who NLS is. He is NOT a journalist, that's for sure. Who's ready to make some guesses?

So, it's ok to slander someone if they deserve it? That's basically what this blog is all about: lying about people you don't like.

NLS:

I'm an Englin supporter and I don't think there was anything wrong with publishing the email. You put it up, and it was proven false. End of story.

The email is important, in that it signifies that people in the 45th are continuing to try to cause trouble for the Englins over their support of Rosenberg. It's lame...but it's going on. In 06, I'm sure we'll see more issues...And after David has been in his seat long enough, there will be pressure for him to run.

I would like to post a personal plea from me, Jonathan Mark, to Shayna Englin to please run for the Democratic nomination for Congress in 2006.

The hoaxer who hit NLS has been on my website GoodbyeJim.com as well. These things happen. But the hoaxer's idea is a good one.

Somehow you and David raised $90K in a delegates race. Andy worked super hard to raise $400K in the congressional. Could you raise $400K? Maybe.

You have never run for office, but neither had Andy, and he won 41.5 percent. He won vertical Arlington and Reston.

I think you could do at least as well, maybe better. Maybe you can win. You may have had as many volunteers as Andy.

Please reconsider. It says in the Talmud, "where there are no other men, be thou a man." No one is on the horizon now to run against Moran in the 2006 primary. You can be that man, Shayna.

the only person who can beat Moran is a person with a machine. love him or hate him, Moran has a winning machine. anything less is a losing proposition.

as for the englin email dustup: who cares? this isn't a news operation, nls isn't a journalist. publishing an unsubstantiated, unsigned email simply proved that.

Jonathan, get over yourself. I hoped that you might have learned at the district convention how overinflated your sense of your own influence is, after dealing with real people who are putting their time and effort into something, rather than anonymous blog posters, but apparently not.

"I took down a thread about a candidate and I don't think I did him much harm" is not a way to ingratiate yourself with a candidate. Nor is being perpetually against candidates and officials rather than for anyone, to the point of supporting destructive candidates from the opposing party and independents misrepresenting themselves as "independent Democrats."

And as for Maura, you're the one who needs to beg forgiveness, not offer it. Try doing a tenth of the work she does to train activists, elect progressive candidates and push the legislature in the right direction, instead of running a one-note attack site, and then maybe you'll attract that kind of traffic, too.

At 7:22 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good writing, but the Dems Against Moran came out for Hurysz last year, who is a mental patient. Whatever, at least they didn't switch parties like Mark.

I know I am not important.

>>>>>"I took down a thread about a candidate and I don't think I did him much harm" is not a way to ingratiate yourself with a candidate.<<<<<

I do not think that my comment is an attempt to ingratiate myself with the Englins. I hardly know them.

>>>Nor is being perpetually against candidates and officials rather than for anyone, to the point of supporting destructive candidates from the opposing party and independents misrepresenting themselves as "independent Democrats."<<<<<<

People told me not to praise Englin on GoodbyeJim.com prior to the election, and I refrained from it. What more do you want? Who was I supposed to be for?

>>>>And as for Maura, you're the one who needs to beg forgiveness, not offer it.<<<<<

If supporting Moran is immoral then for whatever reasons Moran's supporters are behaving immorally. If you do not accept the premise (that supporting Moran is immoral) then obviously you will not see a need to forgive Moran supporters.

>>>>Try doing a tenth of the work she does to train activists, elect progressive candidates and push the legislature in the right direction, instead of running a one-note attack site,<<<<<<<<<<

She has written of spending hundreds of hours volunteering for Moran, including in the primary last year. I view such actions as harmful. She may do many good things when she is not supporting Moran.

>>>>>and then maybe you'll attract that kind of traffic, too.<<<<

I doubt that GoodbyeJim.com will ever attract as much traffic as what I imagine Democracy For Virginia gets, because the latter is statewide and it has at least the rudiments of an organization behind it.

This just in -- I just received an email saying that "anonymous" is a complete loser who has no life and nothing better to do than stay home and make things up about people who are far happier and more successful than he is! He's also too stupid to recognize that his random smear on a candidate's wife is motivated by deep sexual dysfunction and latent misogyny.

Oh, wait, that wasn't in an email. It was just obvious from his posts.

I've known David and Shayna for 9 years, both socially and professionally. The person trying to smear their character obviously doesn't know them. They are, first and foremost, excellent and completely devoted parents. The evidence is obvious in their happy, kind, and bright son.
Dishonest attacks on people's personal lives and children reflect badly only on the people who make them.
