96th District

Melanie Rapp got the lowest percentage of any GOP incumbent re-elected in 2003, but this time Democrats have failed to recruit a candidate to challenge her. Given her prior performance we would have avoided calling the 96th for Melanie against a wet sock, but since the ballot is empty we can now project her as a winner this year. She will join Jack Reid and Bob Hull on Moira's "this could happen to you if you don't vote" tour.

Democrats suck. Can Brian Moran and Kerry Donley honestly say with a straight face that they couldn't find even one solitary Democrat to run in this seat?

Descpicable. I'm done calling myself a Democrat until the Democrats grow some spines and show some brains. It's clear they either don't know how to or are not interested in winning back control of Virginia.

Anon 1:06,

I could not agree more.

Pathetic.

The thing with Rapp is that she gave the teachers a big bill they wanted and got the '06 ceremonies moved to Jamestown/Williamsburg. Huge for local business which has been hurting from a drop off in tourism.

(This isn't to say that I think Rapp is a good candidate... she ain't. But the state GOP gave her what she needed to be a safe seat in this last session.)

Forgit gave it a shot in 2003. York County is just a tough area to win in. The affulent areas of JCC are in that district as well. Rapp isn't a good delegate, but the leadership gave her those bills.

Explain how you would win a district back in which neither Warner or Kaine carried?

Jack Reid could beat her.

Glad you mentioned Bob Hull. I had forgotten about the Biggest Waste of Space in Richmond. Another example of the Democrats taking a safe seat and giving it to a loser who will do nothing with it while the Republicans gets stronger statewide.

wow....harsh comments about Bob Hull...why do you say he is so bad (aside from the state department blunder)...he seems to be ok to this observer

He once authored a bill to make it a crime to steal free newspapers. He has also had constituents write letters to the editor asking where is he after they have tried over and over to get a hold of time.

anon 4:29 what are you talking about

Even Republicans don't like Melanie Rapp. She's easily the dumbest legislator in GA.

I wouldn't say Melanie is dumb. Actually, she's very bright. She just doesn't know when enough is enough.

It's the fact that she lives with her parents that kills her

It's truly remarkable that the Democrats have basically written off all of Hampton Roads and Richmond for possible pickups. They really aren't even going to try.

In Hampton Roads, the large military population will elect the corpse from Weekend at Bernie's if he has an "R" next to his name. I don't see very many pickups around Tidewater, even in the 96th. The only way to get rid of Rapp will be in a primary.

The Dems have little excuse for not pounding on the Richmond region. There's prime Democratic breeding grounds in those there suburbs.

Ok....NLS and NMR..you have uttered the magic words and said there are D seats to pick up in Richmond....you want to to suggest where...I would enjoy that debate...if we could not getHunter McGuire elected in the western part of the metro area who can we get elected? What is the profile needed to take out a Jack Ried (don't give me that stuff about a warm body)...or a Brad Marrs....name the person or describe the profile...

In response to the clamoring about Dem's not running candidates in areas that could, with the right candidate, be pickups. Democrats are attempting to pull an old trick out of the republican hat this year. By not running candidates against incumbents, the republican turnout will be lower, because they won't be coming out to support their beloved local delegate. If these Republicans stay home it gives Kaine a much better shot in November. Look for all of these that don't currently have challengers to be contested in '07, when there isnt a Gov race on the line.

Nonetheless, Forgit should have ran.

You guys aren't thinking. You either got to primary the bastards or put up someone as an independent in the general to split the vote. Take a page out of the Virginia Dobey playbook.

Wait until Leslie Byrne loses this time, she'll go for it. 43 votes still gets you to "the honorable."

At 9:32 PM, Anonymous Rural Not Stupid said...

So you are you saying the Dems should follow the Russ Potts example, and run an independant Republican in each of the seats they are hoping to pick up?

The logic doesn't work for me. If it's a Republican leaning district, even if it did work, it would just be won again in two years.

Also, it's hard enough to find Democrats willing to stick their necks out on the line and run. How in the world do you find that many people willing to run as independents!

A lot of you here don't know a thing about the 96th District that covers York County, James City County and a precinct in Newport News. Melanie Rapp is by far the dumbest republican in the General Assembly. Even her collegues know this. If leaders like Tommy Norment were not helping her in '03 the fat blob would've lost what should have been a safe seat.

I am not totally sold on the fact that this seat can be won by a Democrat. Philip Forgit was a Naval Reservist, Pro-life teacher. However, he had a "D" by his name. That made him intolerable to the many Republicans that populate the 96th.

Forgit won in moderate and liberal precincts such as Queens Lake and Yorktown, but he was unable ot carry enough votes in the most crimson of places in Hampton Roads..... BETHEL, TABB, and HARWOODS MILL. Those places are havens for evangelicals and millitary radicals, and Forgit was whipped handidly there. But hey, not for a lack of trying. Governor Warner blessed Forgit with a ton of money and won the endorsement of the major newspapers. Nonetheless, this wasn't enough to create the right coalition for victory. Now..... if you all know a candidate with a profile like Philip Forgit..... (who received the highest percentage of losing challangers) EVEN MORE THAN THIS YEAR'S DARLING.... LOWELL FULK....... please let me know!

My advice is that we need to start bringing parties back to life in places like York before we think we can actually compete in the reddest of places. Basically, look what Lowell did. Too bad, Philip is from James City and they're party is pretty damn strong!
