Candidate Blogs

Candidates are putting up blog's in force this year. They all say things are going great. Read closer, and it gives a real interesting perspective on how the campaigns are going.

Take for example Janet Oleszek's blog in Virginia's 37th (Chap Petersen's seat). A new entry up today invites you to a "Meet and Greet" in Annandale. It's the only event she lists there coming up soon. And it isn't in her district! Watch out Vivian Watts!!! It's not even close- I-495 is the dividing line... not many people will walk over the beltway from Janet's district to get to that event. It makes you wonder- how well could the campaign be going if you can't get anyone in your district to host the event?

http://janetforfairfax.blogspot.com/ See for yourself.

Open thread here. We've already rated a Mason-Bulova matchup as leaning Mason. Should we do the same for an Oleszek-Mason matchup? Do you all think this is blown out of proportion, or do you agree with us it's a sign of weakness?

I agree with you NLS. 70,000 people in a House district. Do none of them want Oleszek in their house?

Janet Oleszek is currently an at-large school board member representing all of Fairfax County, as well as working with Fairfax City through its contractual relationship with FCPS.

Wouldn't the suprise be if, as a county-wide elected official, she *didn't* have friends in the rest of the county supporting her run?

By the same token, as the townhall meeting for her campaign kickoff demonstrated, she has spectacular, broad-based support in the education community in both Fairfax City and across Fairfax County.

I'm more inclined to view a candidate's choice to build and leverage a broad base of support as a sign of strength than of weakness. But then, I like grassroots politics--and I like winning.

"Tempest in a Teapot" blogging is, of course, a great way to stir up comments on your own site, and drive traffic to the sites you're writing about. So, more power to you. I'm sure the Oleszek campaign appreciates the free publicty on their meet and greet. ;)

I hate it when staffers for a candidate get paid to say nice things about them

Have you never worked for a campaign? You go where the money is. If somebody wants to hold a house party and raise money for you, you go to their house, it don't matter where it is. End of story.

Waldo, have you ever worked on a campaign? Since when is a meet and greet a fundraiser?

I'm with Shaula and Waldo - district boundaries rarely match exactly the boundaries within which a candidate has done work and built relationships. It's not at all unusual for candidates - strong and weak, alike - to have events outside their district. Janet would be crazy not to utlize the county-wide base she's built in prior elections.

Good Morning. Ladies, I totally disagree. It's not a fundraiser. There's no cost to go. There is no excuse to waste a night outside of the district if you are not even raising money. I'm sorry- but if anyone says "But NLS, people can give checks at the event", I am going to throw up. I'm old fashioned- if it is a fundraiser, there is a ticket price. If it is a meet and greet, it's to meet voters in your district for votes.

And if it is a meet and greet outside your district, your dumb.

And by the way- Shayna- you posted at 2:30 am?!? Get some sleep, the 45th district doesn't want a first lady with bags under her eyes! :)

Waldo, have you ever worked on a campaign?

Here and there. :)

Since when is a meet and greet a fundraiser?

Meet and greets are always fundraisers disguised as opportunities to meet the candidate. Undecidededs are not invited to meet and greets -- they're for the faithful. Why invite the faithful? To get their money and their friends' money. The meet and greet is either an opportunity to receive checks or an opportunity to meet people and call them a week later and ask for checks. But they are fundraisers -- make no mistake about that.

These are particularly useful in districts that has unchallenged contiguous districts. Here in the 57th District, whatever Democrat gets the nomination would be dumb not to hold meet and greets and fundraisers in the 59th, since nobody's challenging Wat Abbitt. That's not desperation -- that's just smart campaigning.

Hey, don't look now, but Sen. George Allen is so desperate for money that he's having two fundraisers in New Hampshire. I guess he can't get any money here in Virginia. Or so goes the logic.

Waldo thinks meet and greets are fundraisers in disguise. I think they are "Lazy Candidate who wants to eat chocolate instead of go door to door or stand at a grocery store" in disguise.

Meet and Greets should serve as a supplmental means of voter contact, on top of door knocking and phone banking. They may brng in $40.

I have never seen a lot of money come in at meet and greets. I was involved in the Bailies campaign when we raised almost 3 million dollars- a mighty sum at the time! It was through fundraisers, the meet and greets, people promised money and then never sent in a check.
