67th District

Old Rating: Likely Republican
New Rating: Safe Republican
Primary Outlook: TossUp

Our Western Fairfax Democratic source tells us that recruitment for a serious Democrat to oppose Chris Craddock (should he win the GOP nomination) has failed. We can now call this a Safe Republican seat, the winner on June 14th between Craddock and incumbent Gary Reese will go to Richmond.

SUNDAY UPDATE: The Washington Post covered this tossup this morning.

Chris Craddock HATES gay people. He seriously wants to hurt them. I went to high school with him and he was one of those guys who would beat up somebody if they were gay.

If that's true what high school did you go to and when? Or are you just posting that to be mean?

Yet more proof that Gary Reese is a RINO and real Republicans should support Chris Craddock.

Hey Allen, you can't vote for either one, so hushup.

More proof that outsiders are trying to influence this race...

What proof? I'm glad that "real Republicans" like yourself are out there. Your extreme views are not shared by most of Northern Virginia. I'm glad that we can have some sensible Republicans in office that will vote for NOT shutting down the government so you can save a half cent on every dollar...just so you're aware that's 50 cents for every hundred dollars...

Hey Anonymous,

If you are that concerned about outsiders then why don't you go tell that to the vast majority of Gary's donors who don't live in the district.

I think that people should feel free to be invovled in any election where the elected officials can have an impact on their lives.

Besides I probably live less than 1 mile from the district and have many friends who do live in the district.

My guess is that you are posting under anonymous because you don't live in the the district either but know that tax raising Delegate Gary Reese is in big trouble with regular Republicans.

At 10:23 PM, Anonymous Kevin Allen said...

Kevin,

The VEA/NEA are very liberal organizations who don't generally endorse Republicans. When they do it is either because it is someone who is going to win no matter what or the Republican is a liberal who is out of the mainstream of Repubilican thought like Gary Reese.

By the way, the voters in the 67ht district voted against the tax increase referendum.

Gary Reese is also opposed to placing a cap on Real Estate assessments.

The voters are clearly with Chris on the sales tax increase and I imagine even a higher percentage agree with him on the need to limit the assesment increases on real estate.

The General Assembly could have kept the governemt running at the previous levels without shutting down the government.

"The General Assembly could have kept the governemt running at the previous levels without shutting down the government. "

The Republicans that didn't vote for the increase WANTED a shut down of the government. They wanted to put egg on Gov. Warner's face and hurt either his Senate chances or Presidential asperations.

As an educator, I'm glad that Reese voted for the increase. I will support him in any way possible. See I'm not in the district either but he makes policy for me too.

When they do it is either because it is someone who is going to win no matter what or the Republican is a liberal who is out of the mainstream of Repubilican thought like Gary Reese.

Besides taxes, what else has he done to make you pissed?

Are you going to tell the other Kevin to hushup too?

Kevin,

Gary is not pro-life. And he votes for too much spending and too much government.

At 11:21 PM, Blogger Not Larry Sabato said...

The FEA will get a lot of crossover votes out for Gary. They won the primary in 2001 for him. Of course, he got 39% when two more conservative candidates split 61%. This time he has to get 50.1%.

At 11:48 PM, Anonymous Kevin Allen said...

I agree that Gary is counting on crossover votes to win again. I am hopeful that the fact that this is a two-way instead of three-way race and that there is a competitive Democrat primary for LG will limit the number of crossover voters.

Allen: I'm just going to tell you to hushup again because I think you're a very angry man who is trying to make everyone else angry like you.

The tax increase cannot possibly have made that big a difference in your life. In fact, once I factored in the income tax reductions, I'm actually paying about the same as I was before the "Great Tax Hike."

Sometimes it helps if you take a couple deep breaths and count to ten. Takes some of the rage away.

I love it when the libs flaunt their internal inconsistency. Tell the conservative to hushup because he can't vote, but let the lib babble on because he agrees with you.

Is it any wonder the vast majority of Virginians reject your weakminded message (and, with few exceptions, the only dems that can win have to run as conservatives)?

At 8:03 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't say I was a "lib." I just don't like certain people who always seem to be angry. At first glance, you may fit into that category.

I love the "Weakminded" message comment. If the message is so "weakminded," how come VCAP could only find six challengers to the "feeble-minded 17," and of those at least one has been indicted for a serious felony?

Jeez, if the majority of Virginians think your way, you'd think finding good challengers would be a walk in the park!

Okay, this is what was published previously:

Kevin,

KEVIN ALLEN, I really hate to be the one to pop your bubble, but Gary Reese votes "Pro-Life". I realize that the Craddock campaign has worked very hard to mistate facts. BUT ratings and Vote records don't lie. But don't take my word for it! Look at ratings from the Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL)! Or, how about even the Virginia Catholic Conference, or the Family Foundation of Virginia! You could even look at vote records on the state website. So, if you don't like Delegate Reese, please at least get your facts straight. It's really disheartening that the pro-lifers have allowed Craddock's evangelical message to distort facts and spread misinformation. If anything, the dishonesty of the Craddock campaign should tell us we do not want him as our delegate. As for taxes, let me ask you this...

Gary Reese introduced a bill to provide 40 more hospital beds for the VA hospital in Roanoke. Do you think that money was misspent? Don't you think we have an obligation to disabled vets? If you're so much against taxes, then go after the local property tax. It's easy for you to ignore that Reese voted to reduce sales taxes that hit ordinary people harder than the affluent.

Lastly, why would anyone seriously want Mr. Craddock as their delegate? Would you hire him to manage your company? I doubt it -- he has no experience. So why would you want him to help manage the state of Virginia?

10:11 PM Anonymous,

I am familiar with Gary Reese's voting record and public statements on abortion.

Gary Reese against prohibiting state funds for being used for embryonic stem cell research in 2004. It was a straight up or down vote and he voted wrong.

In 1989 Gary Reese said he was opposed to a ban on abortion and would support limiting abortions after the first trimester only with a health exception. He also stated that he supported parental consent and parental notification legislation.

Other than his votes in favor of the ban on Partial Birth Abortion's I don't see anything in Gary's record which would contradict that pro-abortion position.

While I am certainly glad he voted in favor of parental consent that doesn't make him pro-life. Partial Birth Abortion wasn't an issue in 1989 but since even quite a few pro-abortion politicians support banning the procedure it is hard to argue that supporting the ban makes one pro-life.

His legislative person in his office told my wife that Gary even voted right on the "tough" issues like parental consent. What a joke. If he thinks that is a tough vote to cast when every poll I have every seen shows over 70% of the public support parental consent what is he going to do if Roe vs. Wade is overturned?

In 2001 he told a friend that he still wanted a "health" exception in pro-life legislation. Anyone active in the pro-life community knows that this makes any legislation completely useless because courts have interpreted health to mean absolutely anything.

I know for certain that Chris Craddock will vote correctly on all of these life issues -- without needing to send people to lobby him or have a pro-life opponent to get him to move to the right.

I didn't say all state spending was bad. Gary Reese has done nothing to reduce wasteful state spending. Finding an example of spending that I don't object too that Gary supported doesn't get him off the hook for all the wasteful spending he does support.

I am concerned about property taxes. Chris Craddock supports Jerry Kilgore's plan to limit assesment increases to 5% a year. Gary Reese is opposed to Jerry Kilgore's property tax limitation plan.

In my opinion Chris Craddock is way more qualified to be in the House of Delegates than Gary Reese. Gary Reese's pro-tax and spend votes have shown how unqualified he is.

Kevin,

The pro-life movement needs to get its collective head out of the sand. Yes, a health exception does reduce the effectiveness of what you are trying to do, but would you prefer to have a less effective bill, or no bill at all?

Sounds to me like Gary Reese is being smart by pushing the health exception - he's an attorney and knows federal courts will strike down any bill without health exception language in it. I think recent events shored up his standing on this issue. You guys are going to get nothing unless you bow to political reality.
