42nd District Update

42nd District
Old Outlook: Likely Republican
New Outlook: Leans Republican

We've taken a second look at this race. It fell on the line between a Likely Republican and a Leans Republican rating to begin with, and it still does. But Democratic challenger Greg Werkheiser's fundraising is enough to give him the benefit of the doubt here. He'll be the first Democrat to crack 40% against incumbent Dave Albo.

We still think Albo is the favorite however. He has proven that he can get crossover votes in the past. All Werkheiser has proven so far is he can fill a bank account.

In a dem trending district where money won't be a factor (both of these guys will have plenty to spend) you have to look at other trends that you've largely ignored on this blog (although I love the blog).

First of all, what is the satisfaction level with the incumbent or incumbents in general? And I don't neccesarily mean "are they likeable". But what about problems in the district? In NOVA, the traffic problem might be reaching a breaking point where voters are ready to "vote the bums out". It's getting pretty bad. The same goes for property tax issues. Challengers have these two issues to their advantage in NOVA because they can point at a lack of leadership on these fronts. Whether they do so effectively is another question...

I agree. There's no queston the reason so many competitive races are in Northern Virginia is the general dissatisfaction. I'm not sure it's anti incumbent yet, but if it is, then these elections will get really exciting!

Erm. You might not be aware of this, but the candidate with the most money wins. There are rare exceptions to this, and they're the stuff of legend. To prove you can fill a bank account is, generally, to win.

I'm going to put this as nicely as I can: if you're gonna maintain a blog about HoD races, you're going to want to have some cursory familiarity with the political process. So far, things aren't looking so good on that front around these parts.

Thanks Waldo. You're right- I need to learn more about elections (I had actually thought you would be a good Delegate if you ran). Way Off.

Dem poster-boy Chap Petersen didn't have more money. But, he had lived in the district his whole life and had been elected to something before.
