35th District Update

Old Rating: Toss Up
New Rating: Leans Democratic

Republican chances to unseat freshman Delegate Steve Shannon have withered away a little during their primary. As one Fairfax Republican told me "If we could have Jim Hyland as the candidate and Ed Robinson's money we would win this seat." Well GOP, as a consolation prize you get Ed Robinson's money attacking Jim Hyland, leaving Ed cash poor and Jim with bad name ID. Not going to win you the election! By the way, when you get that machine to make the perfect combo of a candidate, don't forget to use Arthur Purves's good looks! :)

Republicans still have a hope here with a strong performance from Jerry Kilgore. The last Democratic Delegate, George Lovelace was defeated here after one term on the coattails of Jim Gilmore.

It's fair to call Shannon the favorite- but I'm glad you understand he could still lose. Republicans feel good about our chances here in November.

I've known Steve since high school. Electing him was a big mistake. Get your act together Republicans and get him out, before a serious decision needs to be made

I don't know why anyone feels that Hyland is the better candidates. His name ID is not that great I don't even know who he is. I know Ed Robinson because he knocked on my door and asked for my vote. I hear he has knocked on 5,000 doors in the district just trying to listen to what voters have to say. If you ask me that is how you get votes by going door to door and hearing what the voters have to say. So if Robinson is doing the work by going Door to Door and has the money I think he will be a strong republican candidate.

At 4:28 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree the only thing I know about Jim Hyland besides the fact that he got beat bad by Smith is what I read in the Washington Post last week about him accepting a job as a Washington, DC lobbyists.
I think there is something wrong with a lobbyists being elected to public office. How we know if elected he will represent our views in Richmond and not the views of his clients. Robinson, who I also met when he knocked on my door, said he was running for office in order to further his community service. At least if he were elected I know he would be representing the views of our community.

At 4:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That strikes me as very odd. How can someone claim they represent the people, and then take a job as a lobbyist? I read that the only knock on Ed Robinson is his out of state money. If I'm not mistaken I believe that Shannon raised a hefty sum of his money out of state last election. Hyland just doesn't have the resources to compete with Shannon. Robinson can get votes that Hyland never dreamed of getting. I think that Robinson has the drive work ethic as well as the consistency to get the job done right. It's time for the republicans to stand up and take back what's ours.

At 5:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would anyone want Hyland in there? hes a lobbyist. Lobbyist is one thing but you can't erase the line between lobbyist and elected offical

At 5:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Vienna area is very diverse, its time that we get someone that represents everyone. Ed is a good guy that has accutally talked to the voters about issues. I don't see Hyland and Shannon out there talking to everyone.

At 6:16 PM, Blogger Not Larry Sabato said...

Wow, was that one person or was that coordinated? An all out Robinson push. Ed, is that you?

At 8:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am not sure what that was. It was either one person or all the Robinson foks just found the website. My only question is who is Ed Robinson?

At 1:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No it was just me, one person, that is really sick of the crappy politics of this area. I hit the wrong button and had more to add. I just moved in from NY and I thought that New york politics was bad. And no I don't work for Ed Robinson, he just stopped by one day and I got to talk to him hes a really cool guy. I didn't see Shannon or Hyland at my door!

At 2:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Robinson would be a disaster for the GOP. He has no real credentials, most of his money is from out of state (who knows what else is behind that) and I have heard that he is a big liberal masquerading as a Republican. Steve Shannon could take this seat to the bank if Robinson gets the nod. Surely those of us in Fairfax County aren't just going to give this seat to Shannon again.

At 2:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 1:59 PM Anonymous probably knows Ed Robinson if they just moved to area since Robinson probably knocked on their door looking for money in NY. ...maybe they brought his money in small unmarked bills from NY with them...hmm

At 2:20 PM, Anonymous GOP Voter said...

Well I think we all know who wrote the last comment. Welcome to the Blog Mr. Hyland. I think your just jealous because you can't find a way to raise any money yourself.

At 3:08 PM, Blogger Not Larry Sabato said...

And this firing squad is exactly why I changed the rating for Toss Up, to Leans Democratic.

At 3:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only one that "leans Democratic" is Ed Robinson.

At 4:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I see positives and negatives for both ends. Robinson seems like a educated, and sophisticated individual, and Hyland is a very well respected individual. Robinson has money (though most is out of state), and Hyland has well... enough money to buy stamps for his precincts. So my question to all is this, which candidate is out door knocking, calling, and showing the people that he truly cares about THEM? Right now I'm leaning (slightly towards Robinson... but it's still a long race).

At 8:22 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, I was reading this tonight. I live in Vienna and follow GOP politics. I was at County Committee last month. Hyland gave a good speech, Robinson couldn't put two sentances together and said somthing like, Jim said it all. Shannon will slice and dice this guy. Whose giving him money -- surely they don't know him!

At 8:41 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So my mom and wife got some flowers from Robinson. My friends at chruch were talking about it alot to. I also saw that it was in the Metro section of Monday's Washington Post. That is going to be hard to beat.

At 9:13 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I got flowers too. It was a very thoughtful but I won't have my vote bought by a plant.

While I'm as impressed as anyone with Robinson's fundraising, hasn't Hyland loaned himself money before for his campaigns? Anyone think he is taking out a second (or third or fourth mortgage) for the primary?

At 10:18 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am sure Hyland has not loaned himself any money. In fact, I heard he has raised a lot this month. People just love to spread rumors that aren't true. It takes longer to raise money when you aren't going to other states. Robinson just likes to throw around how much money he has raised so he doesn't have to talk about the issues. Money isn't everything and Hyland has a lot of community support.

At 10:22 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Very true. I would be extremely impressed with Robinson's fundraising if he realized he was running to represent the local community. As it stands, I don't know just how much time this man plans on spending in this state seeing as how it seems that he may think he is running for Governor of New York.

At 10:38 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is this Robinson the same guy who was in the Wilder Administration? If it is what is he doing in the Republican primary? The Democrats must have put him there to keep the seat

At 10:47 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, I think you are correct. Robinson has strong Democratic ties and is getting all of his money from out of state Democrats. I don't know why he is running in the Republican primary. Sort of strange.

At 10:53 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Robinson sent my Mom a flower on Mother's Day. If she finds out he bought the flower with Democrats money she'll throw it away!

At 11:07 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't see what the big deal is with Robinson being a Democrat. It is a swing district and maybe nominating someone who is not an anti tax, pro life candidate will be helpful.

At 11:15 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. So what if Robinson is a Democrat running in the Republican primary? There will be no way Democrats can loose in November if it is Shannon and Robinson. That race will also help Tim Kaine by keeping Republicans home.

At 11:43 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So, Robinson is pro choice, pro gay, and pro tax? He is more of Democrat than Shannon. Maybe I'll vote in the Republican primary for a change and vote for him.

At 11:48 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If your a Democrat and voting in the Republican primary you are throwing your vote away other candidates. I'm sure you have more of an interest in who you nominate for Lt. Gov?

At 12:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really sort of like this guy Robinson. Why didn't he run as a Democrat? He is more progressive than Shannon for sure and Hyland is just another Jerry Kilgore Republican...Yuk!!!!!

At 12:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, I really am interested in having a strong Democrat in the House of Delegates. That is why I thought about voting in the Republican primary because Robinson is a better Democrat than Shannon but you are probably right that i should vote in the Dem primary.

At 12:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look you guys. I think Robinson is really an independent. He orginally filed as one. He would be a better Democrat than Shannon. It is important that he beat Hyland because Hyland is a crackpot republican who worked for George Allen and Jim Gilmore.

At 12:16 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think most Republicans would think of Jim Glimore and George Allen as crackpots. Let's not get to name calling here. Fact is that for Republican voters, Hyland is the only candidate they can really trust to represent Republican values.

At 12:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hyland is a right wing Republican lunatic just like Allen, Gilmore and Kilgore. Quit hiding from it. I hope the democrat Robinson or other guy in there wins. Hyland will be worse than Allen or Gilmore

At 12:24 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It sounds like you guys are mad because you do not like the truth about Repbulicans. You guys are so conservative I bet you would not send flowers to people's moms like Ed Robinson did. You guys have got to lighten up on the Republican garbage.

At 12:27 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That kind of bigotry and open-mindedness that is so prevelent on the left today is exactly the kind of hypocrisy that is causing the problems we can see throughout politics today. In your mind, Republican and lunatic go hand in hand. Most rational people understand that people have different opinions and appreciate a discourse. It makes me really sad to see such hatred and bigotry within the voting public so close to home.

At 12:28 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are making assumptions about Republicans. I sent my mother flowers, I wouldn't send someone flowers to buy their vote. Why is it always that if you don't agree with someone or share their views that they are garbage? What happend to Democracy?

At 12:30 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. All Republicans are crazy and if Hyland is affliated with Gilmore, Allen and their ilk I am glad this Democrat guy Robinson is running against him in the primary. I know that Jerry Kilgore is supporting Hyland and that is enough to scare me away from him.

At 12:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So big deal. Jerry Kilgore's for Hyland. Who cares? So is Tom Davis and his wife, John Warner, George Allen and Jim Gilmore. But who cares? Just a bunch of Republicans supporting another Republican

At 12:37 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Robinson the same Ed Robinson associated with all of that Minority Student Union stuff at his alma mater back then?

At 12:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am sure it is. One of his major donors is under investigation and could be indited very soon. There is alot of stuff in Robinson's background that is a little shady

At 12:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh great. So now here come the Rebublicans attacking Ed Robinson because he is not anti tax, supports gay marriage, and is pro choice. Great guys. Who put you up to this George Allen or Jerry Kilgore. When Robinson beats Hyland Allen and Kilgore will look like fools.

At 12:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So will Tom Davis. He is a Hyland supporter too

At 1:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here we go again. Who cares if Tom Davis, Jean Marie Devolites, Jerry Kilgore, George Allen or any of the rest of the Republicans from the area support Jim Hyland. The only reason they support him is because he is against taxes increases, pro life and against gay marriage. Who cares what they think?

Allen=Gilmore=Kilgore=Davis=Hyland=right wing lunatics.

At 1:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

My God. Who are you people? Jim Hyland should be proud of the fact that he has the support of George Allen, Tom Davis, Jerry Kilgore and Jim Gilmore. These are great people. Who would you rather have him be supported by some loser like Chuck Robb?

At 1:11 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No flowers for you buddy! You right wing Republican jackass.

I hope this Robinson guy wins your primary so all of you right wing lunitics will have to line up behind him and support him. I am glad Ed Robinson is a moderate Democrat leaning guy and I hope he wins. See how George Allen and Jerry Kilgore like that.

At 1:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think you should be ashamed to say things like that. This is what is wrong with the political debate in this country. You think it's fine to call someone a jackass because they are Republican. You must have no respect for yourself or for the political process if you find that accpetable.

I don't know how Jim Hyland can bash Mr. Robinson for being pro-gay. As member of the Fairfax Log Cabin Republicans we endorsed Jim when he ran last time. Jim you were Pro-Gay in your last race, have you changed your stance now?

Is Hyland the only Republican in the primary or is there someone else?

At 2:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No there are 2 other people in his primary. 1 person who has ran several times before and the other one is this Democrat Robinson who has raised thousands of dollars from John Kerry's and Hillay Clinton's donors. He also has some money from people who have been indicted or something.

At 2:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hope Hyland has not bashed Robinson for being pro gay. We do not need that. I have never heard Hyland mention that.

I hope Robinson's people are not creating a false issue. I would not think they would because his manager is a member of the log cabin group I think.

They all should know better than this.

At 2:45 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have not heard either candidate bash the other one and I hope they don't because it will hurt the party.

I really do not think it was wise for Kilgore, Davis, Devolites, Gilmore and Allen to endorse Hyland in the primary.

I am sure they all think Hyland is the strongest candidate against Shannon but i think it is inappropriate for elected Republicans to endorse in a primary.

At 2:49 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it was wise for Kilgore and Davis to endorse so we can nominate the right one.

If Kilgore and Davis are Hyland that is good enough for me.

At 2:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would normally agree that elected Republican officials should not endorse in a Republican primary, but this primary is a little bit different. You have some distinct people to choose from. Jim Hyland has been very active in local Republican politics for years now. Arthur Purves has been very active throughout the independent political circles. Ed Robinson seems to have gotten lost on his move six years ago. He seems to have his strongest ties within the Democrat circles up in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

I am for Jim Hyland 100% but I never heard that Davis, Allen, or Kilgore had endorsed Jim.

Tom Davis personally recruited Jim Hyland to run. I don't know if that is good or bad but i know it is true. I am voting for him because Robinson is a shady guy with a questionable past and I do not like Shannon.

At 4:41 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't like the fact that Hyland ran and lost to a Democrat.

But I really do not like the fact that Ed Robinson is a Democrat running in the Republican Party. I heard he is pro choice, pro gay marriage, and is shaky on tax issues. What is worse he is apparently lying about his positions but he does send out nice flowers to peoples moms

At 4:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is a pretty cool site. I don't know where the heck the 35th District is but I guess it includes me because of the Oakton area. This stuff is funny. I remember the Hyland name. I think I remember him being a pretty good guy, I was floating toward voting for him. Some people came to my door for that guy Robinson but they didn't seem to know much and they couldn't tell me when or if he would come by personally. Not good as far is I am concerned. When is the primary again?

Robinson's campaign sent flowers to peoples moms on Mothers Day. They are really running a bizarre campaign over there--wasting a lot of money. I really think they are incompetent over there. Most of the party leaders think so too.

Purcis seems like an interesting candidate.

No, Tom Davis tried to get Robinson out because he was causing an unnecessary diversion in the primary. Robinson is just a Democrat spoiler aiding Shannon. It is a shame.

Not Larry Sabato -- this is why you should change the rating for the primary to Likely Robinson.

Instead of spending their time raising money or meeting voters, Hyland's campaign is wasting its time posting anonymous messages on this blog.

I did not see any further information about Robinson's problems with the student union. When is this coming out?

I just heard that Steve Shannon is endorsing Jim Hyland in the Republican Primary. So now Jim is endoresed by Davis, Kilgore, Allen, Warner, and now Shannon. Wow Hyland is really great. Why even have a primary it seems like everyone just loves Jim Hyland.

Question where were all these people when he lost to Linda Smith?

Who is "I have nothing better"? Must be a disgruntled Robinson guy who feels the heat. Probably the same brain surgeon who dreamed up the send the flower scheme.

I have nothing better really is a loser. Davis, Kilgore etal were out campaigning for Hyland then as well like all good Republicans. I am sure this was during the time when Ed Robinson was in New York campaigning for Hillary Clinton.

At 10:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Word is that Steve Shannon is somewhat concerned about Ed Robinson's money but he thinks that he can overcome that with his own party money and on a head to head comparison he would easily beat Robinson's thin resume with his own. Apparently he is more worried about Hyland's stronger background and thinks Hyland's cash will be there after this initial race, but it all remains to be seen.

At 10:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with you. I am sure Shannon is worried about Robinsons money. However, he has ran such a lackluster campaign and made such poor decisions with the money he has spent so far it makes you wonder if he can run a professional campaign. Does Robinson have professional help? It does not appear so and Shannon will for sure.

At 2:03 PM, Anonymous John Q Public said...

Dose anyone making comments in this blog know anything about politics? Or is this whole blog just made of personal friends of Hyland and Robinson who have nothing better to do that bash their buddies opponent in the hopes someone will read this. Well I guess I am a sucker because even though I don't live in the 35th I wasted my time by reading this blog in the hopes of some educated thoughts on this race. Personally I don't live in this district and don't know either candidate and really don't care who wins this race.
I will say whoever posted that last comment about Robinson having a lackluster campaign and not have professional help is just plain stupid. He may not have spent his money well, but so far from what I have heard his campaign has been anything but lackluster. His campaign has taken a guy who no one knew and turned it into a campaign that is being talked about all over the state of Virginia. Fine maybe his flower idea was a waste of money and cheesy but guess what everyone knows who he is now from doing it. I have been around campaigns for a long time and it seems to me that the name of the game is how to get the attention of the voter's and I think Ed my have found one way to get it. As far Hyland some people know who he is he ran before and I think he is running a professional campaign. However at the same time he is running the same campaign as everyone else does. Robinson may not win and may lose because of his style but one thing is for sure people will remember his campaign win or lose. He is breaking all the traditional rules and really shaking things up. I think he is a fun candidate to watch. Besides these ideas that the Hyland folks in this room seem to think are so unprofessional may just be the things that win the election and what everyone else starts to use in the future.

At 2:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Clearly John Q. Public as in "I am on Ed Robinson's Paid Staff" has no clue about politics or this race. It is obvious by his comments. I am not sure what his preoccupation is with the hyland people whatever that is supposed to mean. My guess is that "John Q" needs to crawl back in his hole and shut his mouth. I hate it when people spout off about things they do not understand.

At 2:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with Anonymous. John Q. must be on Robinson's staff. The only thing people are saying about Robinson's campaign around the state is that he is wasting a lot of money and appears childish and unprofessional. They also indicate that he is being underserved by an obviously poor staff.

I will say that I have not heard anything about Hylands campaign except he has signs in everyones yards and is knocking on doors.

Not Larry said it best, "If Republicans had Hyland as the candidate and Robinson's money this would be a competitive race."

Robinson's presence insures Shannon's re-election.

At 2:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So Hyland is a loser and so is Robinson. Republicans have no chance. This is great. I am for Shannon.

At 3:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is more of a campaign on this blog than in the district. Obviously the Democrats are happy to see the primary between Hyland and Robinson.

If everything I have seen and heard is true the Democrats must have encouraged Robinson to run as a spoiler. He has taken thousands of dollars from New York liberals who support Planned Parenthood, the radical Gay agenda, hillary clinton etc.

Any Republican who cannot see that is in real trouble.

At 3:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I do not know about the money or any of the rest of this. I do know I was at a GOP meeting and Robinson could not put to sentences together. I was embarrassed for him.

Can we get to the issues in this campaign?

1.) Where do the candidates stand of the death penalty, higher taxes, gay marriage?

2.) Does all of Robinsons money come from New York from Hillary's donors?

3.) Does Hyland not have any ability to raise money?

4.) Did Devolites, Davis, Kilgore and Allen really endorse Hyland?

Let's talk about things that really matter in here.

At 5:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

John Q you know nothing about politics. Robinson should have hired a professional campaign team with a real manager like Christian. Jim has a real professional in that kid everyone knows that the way to win an election is whit yard signs. Only a professional like Christian would think of a yard sign plan like that.

Anonymous why don't you like in under a name so we call all see how dump you are when you talk. Just because I think that Robinson's flower project was a success I am on the Robinson staff.

So I guess that means since you were talking about how great Christian is (whoever he is) that means you are on Hyland's staff.

At 5:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good questions.

Robinson opposes the death penalty in all cases. Sort of the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson approach. Hyland is a supporter of the death penalty. Sort of the Bush-Kilgore approach.

99% of all of Robinson's money has come from a few large donors in New York. They are all big liberal Hillary Clinton/Barney Frank types. No one in NOVA will give him money because off his Democrat ties

Hyland does not have any money. He and his wealthy family are paying for his entire campaign.

Yes Hyland is the choice of the establishment. Devilites, Davis, and Kilgore all support him. He is an old line Republican type of guy. Robinson is the new comer Democrat turned Republican guy.

Neither one of them will beat Shannon.

Why waste our time acting like you don't know the answer to these questions they are all pro Jim questions.

How about is Hyland a proven loser, because he could not beat Linda Smith?

Or how will Jim raise his money? Will he and his Dad put in 1/3 of everything he has raised like his last race?

Or how about what candidate was endorsed by the log cabin Republicans?

See you can make pro Robinson questions just as easy.

Someone asked the question on here yesterday about Robinson's problems with the student union. I have noticed his supporters and campaign staff who appear to spend endless hours on this blog have not had a lot to say about this. Maybe they should answer this question

At 8:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. They also ought to tell us why Ed filed orginally as an independent and why he has taken over $100,000 from New York Democrats.

Who are the New York liberals that are giving to Robinson? Can someone give examples and documentation?

At 10:58 AM, Anonymous John Q Public said...

Wow, Hyland staff unite to attack me for saying Robinson had a good idea with the flower project. All I hear from the pro-hyland people in this blog is bad stuff about Ed is there anything good to say about Jim?

As far as Robinson's money goes who cares Shannon proved last time that no one really cares where you get your money from as long as you get it.

My advise for the Hyland folks stop crying about how much more money Robinson has and go out and raise your own money.

At 11:36 AM, Anonymous John Q Public said...

Where is the Hyland Blog team today.

At 12:40 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

John Q--You entered this discussion and obviously know nothing about the professional aspect of politics. That was made clear from earlier e-mails. I don't think anyone was attacking you but your idiotic statements. Frankly, your experience level and knowledge of politics appears to be so limited that you do not merit being attacked.

At 12:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous--Please go to www.vpap.org and go to the donors section. You'll find a complete list of the New York liberals supporting Democrat Robinsons campaign. These are the same people supporting Barnie Frank, Al Sharpton, and Hillary.

At 12:47 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Most Republicans are attacking Robinson because they do not like his Democratic background, the fact that he has taken more than $100 k from New York liberals, the fact he is opposed to the death penalty, that he will not rule out raising taxes, and that he supports gay marriage. I don't think these are Hyland attacks as much as they are Republican attacks.

My guess is that Robinson will whine like John Q when the facts are out there.

At 12:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe we should get Robinson to send John Q. some flowers since he is having such a bad day! Or some lollipops or baby food.

At 2:57 PM, Blogger betterthanyou said...

HAHA sorry, I just saw the statement that there was money given to Ed Robinson by New York Liberals. I just have to say, what are you smoking??? I didn't think that Virginia legalized pot down here, but I guess I am wrong.
Ed Robinson's view's are not in the same wavelength as Northeastern Liberals. Must be that person is not from the northeast. They would never give money to Ed. Why would they support someone that they don't know, or have the same views as him? If anyone on the other side were to give money to Robinson it was because of all the good and positive things that he as done. Pull the bong out of your mouth and think a bit before you speak.

At 3:24 PM, Blogger smarterthenhyland said...

See my favorite thing is that the people that are anonymous. I know that Hyland is lazy and just goes to the Republican doors, but didn't think that his whole staff was that way. Come one people put your name up there. OO I forgot, Hyland can't get money from his friends, even in the lobby world because they think that its not a good idea for a lobbyist to be an elected official..

At 4:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

My guess is that the bong was in better than you's mothers mouth.

At 4:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Better than you should go to the VA campaign site and check out the information. There you will see the paper trail of New York liberals who have given to Robinson including one under possible indictment.

My guess is they are giving to Ed because ed supports gay marriage and opposes the deth penalty.

At 4:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is exactly right. All of the information is there.

At 5:20 PM, Blogger betterthanyou said...

Yeah I looked it up. Let me get this straight, if they are from New York state, New York City, or basically anywhere in New York they are Liberals. Did you ever think that maybe these people thought that Ed is a good man that has done some good things for people and some people want to show how appreciative they are of him?

OO and the bong in my mom's mouth.. man that was funny I laughed all the way back to 6th grade when I used that one. I didn't know that Hyland had middle school children on his campaign. I guess he is just getting desperate

At 5:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It could be that or they could be trying to buy a seat in Virginia by keeping their fellow northeastern liberal in their pocket. I could see one or two small donations coming from out of the district but every donation is a little bit ridiculous. You would think the guy just moved here or something.

At 5:52 PM, Anonymous John Q Public said...

I know according to the blog I am dumb and do not know a thing about politics. Hey maybe anonymous is right, but it seems to me we are all missing the point.

As far as I know Robinson has never said he was Pro-Gay marriage. I don't see on his website or have read anything that says he is for raising taxes. So where is anonymous getting all this information.

Who cares where he got the money from the think the point is he raised the money. He is the only candidate who seems to be able to raise the kind of money it will take to beat shannon.

Can if Hyland can't raise money to compete with Robinson in the Primary how will he even stand a chance in the general. Steve has raised even more than Robinson.

At 9:44 PM, Blogger reagan2005 said...

I think that it is sad to think that a person can win a seat through name recongition. I would rather someone work to get the seat rhrough had work and ideas. I hope that people get to know the candidates a little better.

At 4:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know Hyland is working hard. He is a full time lawyer and yet is knocking on a lot of doors. Shannon didn't have a job when he ran for office, and apparently Robinson doesn't either. Hyland had a lot of good ideas during his Supervisor campaign, like moving traffic off the roads quickly. I hope he wins, I could use the help in my commute.

At 11:03 AM, Anonymous Sweetwood said...

If you really think be electing either one of these candidates your commute is going to get any better your a dreaming. Every candidate every year says they will slove the traffic problem and yet no one has yet so what makes you think Robinson or Hyland can do it?

At 7:28 AM, Anonymous agpurves said...

One of the reasons our commute isn't getting any better despite higher taxes is that public school staff is increasing four times faster than enrollment.

Yeah your right we should have schools that have like 200 people in a classroom. Your right about taxes being to high but school administrators have to spend their appropriated money wisely.

At 5:32 PM, Blogger Vienna Mom said...

What do you really know about your Republican primary candidates for the 35th District?

I've known Ed Robinson for years, and I trust him completely to do what is right for my family and our Vienna community. I know that he will listen to us, and truly represent our best interests.

Ed is not a slick lobbyist, and he's not a part of the good old boy network. Rather, Ed is a really good guy who cares about his neighbors and wants to serve his community. And he has the brains and the spirit to do it.

So I ask you again -- what do you really know about your Republican primary candidates?

At 8:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This must be the most pathetic blog thread I have ever witnessed. Whoever is trying to sow these seeds is absolutely terrible--your motives are so transparent it's ridiculous. I just hope you are getting paid good money to talk to yourself/yourselves.

I don't give a crap about this race, but this thread presents the perfect argument for why anonymous comments should not be allowed.

Thanks for destroying a potentially good political conversation with the spambombing, dumbass(es).

I thought this blog was supposed to be for discussing the candidates, and who we are voting for and why.

And btw, no one is paying me for anything. I'm just a mom who really cares about getting the representation we deserve in Richmond, and I think Ed Robinson would serve us best.

At 12:41 PM, Anonymous fireshannon said...

I agree with the latest update of this race. While I think this race is still to close to call, I think Ed Robinson is starting to be seen as a front-runner. For no other reason they he seems to be the only candidate who has an active campaign. If Hyland does not start campaign soon this race will be over before the voters even go to the polls.

If you had to vote for one of the other two candidates who would it be Hyland or Robinson?

At 12:50 PM, Anonymous Oakton Voter said...

I agree with fireshannon Robinson is the only candidate have been hearing from. I got a phone call and some of his mail. I have not gotten anything from Hyland. Maybe he just thinks the voters already know who he is so he does not have to mail and phone them.

At 2:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have seen the Hyland Campaign working. They have signs up and have knocked on plenty of doors and I have received 2 calls from them. Just because the aren't putting junk in my mailbox everyday doesn't mean they aren't working. I'm sure they would be mailing every day to if they were taking all that out of state money i've been hearing about.

At 2:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have heard that there will be a major news story next week about the fact that Ed Robinson's flowers were imported from Cuba. Taking money from outsiders and getting flowers from Cuba. This should be interesting.

At 2:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think anyone knows enough about what is going on to decide who is the front runner. Anyone who declares themselves as the front runner is just saying that to serve themselves.

At 2:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cuba - maybe Castro sent them as a gift to Ed. Maybe it is another outsider contribution!

At 2:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Probably wouldn't be the worst criminal to donate to Robinson.

At 2:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard Robinson was hiring immigrant day workers to run around handing out campaign stuff. Maybe that's the Cuban connection....

At 2:21 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can't wait to see that story. Maybe Ed will send me some cigars instead of a plant.

At 3:57 PM, Anonymous Not Voting for Hyland Now said...

Someone needs to tell Mr. Hyland I do not appreciate his campaign people dropping off large political junk mail on my lawn.

I have never said I was voting for Mr. Hyland and I don't understand why he would put one of his yard signs with a nasty Robinson attack message on the back of it on my lawn.

At 4:01 PM, Anonymous GOP VOTER said...

I got one of those Hyland sign things also I just threw it way after all what else to you expect but a bunch of junk mail 2 weeks before an election.

I do there were some pretty cheap shots at Robinson in that letter. I guess so far Robinson is the better of the two candidates not going to that low level of politics.

At 4:04 PM, Anonymous John Q Public said...

I agree 100% GOP VOTER. These are the kind of things that turn people off from politics. I just hope that Robinson stays above this level.

The only think I can think is that Hyland must be worried about Robinson now. Otherwise why would he go to below the belt politics like this.

At 8:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I got the sign too and I learned a few things about Ed Robinson from reading it. Hyland just pointed out the truth about Ed Robinson's money and he's right. Who is paying for all that stuff Robinson is throwing around the neighborhoods? Since when was the truth below the belt?

At 8:37 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can Robinson prove anything in the letter wrong? Didn't out of state money pay for his campaign?

At 8:52 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't live in this District. I live in the 37th, but I attended a debate last week with Robinson, Purves, Hyland and our two candidates, Mason and Kaplan. I was stunned at how poorly Robinson did. If the voters of the 35th saw that this race would be over right now. Robinson even used the word "pissed" several times. As for being a conservative, he couldn't even answer a question. He came out for red light cameras and ducked a question on stem cells. I can't believe he is running. Shannon will eat him alive and the Party will be embarassed. I hope Hyland can win this one.

At 7:20 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The funniest thing about all of this campaign stuff is that Robinson says stuff, from what you all say, in person and in the newspapers that makes himself sound like he knows nothing, understands nothing and is just plain off the mark. Then he has this campaign with printed stuff talking turkey - issue specifics. I guess that is what a lot of money can buy, a propped up puppet candidate.

At 11:44 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess Hyland and his team did not learn anything from the last primary in the 35th. A primary in which both candidates destroy each other only helps Shannon more for the general. It is sad the Hyland had to take his campaign to that level.

At 11:48 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Hyland people say that this is not dirty politics they are just telling the truth. Ok fine but then Jim tell everyone the truth about where your personal income comes from. You are lobbyists you get paid to represent special interests and you are worried about Robinson connections to special interests because his personal friends donate money from out of state. Come on Jim it seems like you are the pot calling the kettle black

At 12:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For the record, these names on this blog, GOP Voter, Not Voting For Hyland Now, and John Q. Public are all on Ed Robinson's payroll. They are being paid to fill this blog with trash with money from Jesse Jackson's and Hillary Clinton's largest donors. All of this money comes from New York through Robinson's campaign connections with Barney Frank and that group.

At 12:09 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Did anyone notice that Ed Robinson's flags were made in CHINA? This guy and his campaign groupies really are idiots.

At 12:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All right. Enough name calling. Lets get to the facts. Endorsing Hyland are: Tom Davis, Jeanne Deviliteous, Jerry Kilgore, Bill Bolling, Sean Cannaughton, Michelle Brickner, Jack Herrity, Polly Chomes and Rob McDowell.

Endorsing Robinson are: Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Barney Frank, Al Sharpton, and as I understand it, many Virginia liberal leaning Democrats.

There is a clear choice for the voters.

At 12:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I attended the debate the other night. Without question, Robinson gave one of the worst performances I have ever seen in my life. This guy is a joke.

At 12:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you think that is bad look at his candidates survey in the newspaper. The guy is clueless. Robinson actually said, "transportation is not a major issue." He needs to go back to his home in New York City.

At 1:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was undecided until I read the candidates surveys in the Connection. Robinson is clearly ill prepared to serve as Delegate. His answers are absurd.
The guy does not believe taxes and transportation are major problems.

I voted absentee for Hyland this morning.

At 1:53 PM, Blogger Not Larry Sabato said...

You mean this?

4. What is the biggest issue facing your district? What should be done to address it?

"The biggest issue facing the district is not transportation, education or taxes, although those are important. The real problem is an erosion in faith in our public institutions, which all too often prevents us from working together to solve our problems. A nation that distrusts its police forces, its military or its government is a nation in trouble. There is no easy fix, but one thing we can do is to level with the electorate on tough issues. Another thing we can do is to lower the temperature in our public debate. We should agree to disagree, and not let the personal overwhelm the political. Just as we teach our children not to hate others because of skin color or accent, so we should not teach them to hate their political opponents."

Very Odd Answer.

At 2:02 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Very odd indeed. Even odder that a guy who has not even been involved in politics suddenly wants to be a Delegate and takes thousands of dollars from out of state interests to do it.

Wow, you all weren't kidding when you said that Ed Robinson gave a poor debate performance. Check out this link:

I just checked it out. Yes, that is Ed Robinson. I attended the debate that night and almost fell out of my chair when the guy said this.

I think that guy in New York paid him to say it. Must be.

At 2:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This whole campaign is a joke. You've got this qualified guy, who has actually been involved in the Republican party, who has not been able to raise the kind of money during a primary to match someone who just took a bunch of money from god knows who and says stuff like this.

At 2:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I listened to the clip. It really is bad. Doesn't this Robinson have a campaign manager or staff to help him not make a fool out of himself?

It appears from what Robinson has said in the newspaper that his staff and his ideas are from Mars. This just kills me.

At 2:30 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That pretty much says it all.

Yes, Ed looked very smart in those pictures in the referee's uniform.

Yes, Ed was very articulate with his Mars statement.

Most impressive however was Ed's debate performance with these inspiring words..."I don't have any specific plans or ideas."

He is a really bright guy. Congrats!

At 5:13 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey cool,

I think you need to check the facts about your contest. Maybe you can get some help from the Hyland team, I heard they are really good.

I you need to ask Jim if he voted in the last Republican Primary for this district. While Jim did vote in the 2003 firehouse primary that was not a real primary election. It was only for the delegate race and was not even held at normal polling places.

However Jim did not vote in the 2001 Republican Primary. Which was a normal primary held at the normal polling places.

So while Mr. Robinson did not vote in the firehouse primary he was not alone in fact about 98% of registered votes did not vote in it.

At 5:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hate to ask again and get in the middle of all of this sniping between people but I would like some answers please.

Did Ed Robinson have legal problems with the student union? Yes or no?

Has Ed Robinson's $20,000 donor from New York been indicted? Yes or No?

Did Ed Robinson really take and spend more than $100,000 from New York and try to by this election? Yes or no?

I forgot that a blog is suppose to be serious... how about this one..

being from New York I was interested in the man that gave $20,000 to Ed Robinson and is now being sued by Eliot Spitzer, New York State Attorney General, who is a democrat. I would like everyone to know that Eliot Spitzer has a personal vendetta against any and all people in the financial and insurance sector. He is only building his resume up for his next run at governor in 2006. He has been reaching out of his jurisdiction for years and now it has finally caught up to him. The federal government is now launching their own investigation into Eliot Spitzer’s practices. I know for a fact that if a Republican wants start condemning another fellow Republican I do not think that he should be getting his evidence from a Democrat.

At 5:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here are the answers to your questions:

Yes, Ed Robinson had major problems with his activity in the student union.

Yes, Ed's major donor (20k) from New York is under investigation by the New York AG

Yes, Ed has taken more than 100k from New York liberals to try to by this race. Ed orginally filed as an independent but then changed and decided to run as a Republican. He did this at the urgings of the liberals to destroy a Republican chance to win this seat.

At 5:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Finally, blog team Robinson admits their major donor is in legal trouble in New York.

Now, why did Ed file as an independent first if he is such a good Republican?
