The 1st and the 100th

OK, kind of random here, but a couple districts we wanted to call. The first and the last seemed like two good ones to do.

1st District- Incumbent Terry Kilgore seemed like he might get a race this year. Democrats took over the County Board in Scott County, and his mother hasn't exactly helped the family name recently. Democrats also couldn't hide their glee at taking out the brother of Governor's candidate Jerry Kilgore.

But a strong challenge never materialized here. So far the Democrats are still searching for a candidate, and Kilgore was the only Republican endorsed by the mine workers union this week. Tip: When a Union endorses a Republican one of two things happened. 1) they are getting re-elected and the union is cutting their loses. 2) The Republican really supports their cause. I'm betting on #1 on this one.

100th District- This was going to be one of the great elections in 2003. In the end Lynwood Lewis ended up winning the open seat by almost 20 points, and no strong Republican is emerging this year. This is a pickup, and the Democrats with Lynwood Lewis will hold the Eastern Shore for the foreseeable future.

Just wait and see. The Democrats have a great candidate in the 1st House of Delegates seat race. He's announcing June 1 and watch the Kilgores scramble after that.

I know the man who will be announcing. He has a history of public service on appointed boards, community events and other affairs. Certainly, he has a varied background in economic development across the First District. When I spoke to some of his supporters in Wise, Lee, Scott and Washington County, they said, "This guy (the Democrat challenger) is going to be hard to beat." I was pleasantly surprised.
The people in the First certainly want a change and now they have a great choice.
This race is going to be a good one.

I have to tell you; If this is the guy I think it is....Oh Boy! He is a Democrat that is supremely organized, has the tone of reason and the vision that is unlike anything we have seen in the first since Ford Quillen and Orby Cantrell.
This guy likes projects. Not the type that costs the state but the type that uses the already available resources. This guy, as we like to say it here in the First, knows how to take all the pieces of the puzzle and put them together and build a concensus as he is doing so. Unlike his likely opponent.
Boy, am I looking forward to this announcement.

Just an interesting aside. The UMWA guy - you can find his name easily enough - promised that they would withold issuing the endorsements until AFTER the Democrat caucus. That didn't happen. The guy claims that he 'did what he had to do,' but I think the actual truth is, in declining to endorse one Kilgore, he hedged his personal bets by endorsing the other.

Like myself, the Democratic candidate comes from a coal mining family, and I doubt the rank and file will be pleased with the guy who broke his word to push an andorsement for Terry Kilgore through.
